I, too, am more of a cat person.
Had cats as pets most of my life, and in general they involve less maintenance if you're not home all the time or if it's really nasty weather outside.
Several of the cats (including my current one) have been strays. No purebreds or pet shop buys (at least as far as I'm aware).
