Top Sleuth Game - ep1 - The Killer Card

Post by Jamie »

I'd like to try out a new format for my mysteries, for which I need 5 or 6 players.
It will be a usual TV style game basis involving deduction and elimination. Deducting the clues, and eliminating your rivals.
Each round will involve questioning, making suggestions, receiving the scores, and then voting to 'kill off' a fellow sleuth who you consider your competition.
Anyone wanna play?

So far we have:

CMustard - Monseiur Algie Peridot
TheBilliardRoom - Detective Sergeant Maria Copper
Black - Inspector Mycroft Chromes
Zoo977 - Detective Exie Manate
Cluedoauthor12 - Sergeant Hadley Mist
Cluedoking123 - Detective Benny N. LeJets

Sure, I'll try it out. Is there anything I need to submit?
"Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests?"
"You don't need any help from me, sir."
"That's right!"

Great...all you need to do is create a detective character to play as. (not cluedo suspects).

I'll return the favor since you played my game.

As for my detective. I'll be the one I created for my TV series, Insp. Mycroft Chromes.

February 10th 2012: John Boddy has invited seven acquaintances to dinner at his home, Tudor Close. We join the party as dinner comes to an end and the host’s motives are revealed.

At the home of Mr John Boddy, he and several dinner guests were gathered around the magnificent dining table. The final course of a delicious three course meal had just been finished and the housekeeper, Mrs White had served coffees. The table was adorned with several small vases of red flowers, decorative garlands and three large gold candlesticks that provided the light in the room. The seven guests; Mrs Virginia Peacock, Colonel James Mustard, the Reverend Green, Madame Marguerite Rose, Captain Robert Brown, Miss Katherine Scarlett and Professor Simeon Plum were creating polite conversation amongst each other, when their host stood and addressed them.
‘Now I’m sure that you are all wondering just what my invitation was for.’
‘Yes John, why have you brought us all here?’ asked the Reverend Green.
‘Because I want to kill Miles Meadow-Brook, my lawyer and I need some assistance’, came the casual reply.
After the gasps of astonishment had subsided, Mr Boddy stood and addressed his startled guests.
‘I want all of you to help me, although only one person will have to act. You all know about my penchant for playing little games. I have here eight envelopes, inside one of them is a card with the word killer on it, the other seven contain blank white cards. You will each select an envelope randomly, and open it alone later. Whoever gets the killer card will kill Miles for me.’
The group were startled by the sound of breaking glass as Mrs White knocked two champagne flutes off the sideboard.
‘But why kill Miles?’ asked Scarlett, returning back to the original conversation.
‘The old fool is losing his touch and is costing me money. I would fire him except that over the years he has become privy to some personal information about my business practices. Information that I can’t risk becoming public knowledge’ replied Boddy.
‘And why would we do such a thing, why us?’ asked Captain Brown.
Mr Boddy smiled a rather wicked smile.
‘That’s obvious Robert. Because each of you is guilty of murder, or at the very least manslaughter.’
‘Crazy’.
‘Ridiculous’.
‘I assure you it is neither of those’, assured Boddy. ‘I have evidence of all of your guilt. I shall spare revealing all the gruesome details here and now. If you refuse to go along with my plan, then I shall hand over the evidence to the police. If you do decide to help me then I will keep the evidence to myself. And the odds are in your favour, only a one in eight chance of having to add to your murderous past. What do you say? would anybody like to opt out of my plan?’
Silence and embarrassed glances were all that greeted him.
‘Excellent’ chirped Boddy reaching into his jacket pocket. ‘The envelopes are here, you will see that they are numbered one to eight. I know which number contains the killer card; this is purely for my insurance because I need to know who the assassin is to make sure they finish the job. And of course if the appointed assassin doesn’t kill Miles, I shall be forced to tell the authorities what I know. In the killer’s envelope I have written the location of a revolver that is hidden in this house. You don’t have to use it, in fact I don’t care how you do it, as long as it is during the week beginning 27th April while I am away in Berlin and have an iron cast alibi. Incidentally I will be back a week later, just in time for my 57th birthday, for which I am throwing a party which I trust will be a double celebration.’
‘Now who would like first pick, ladies first maybe?’ he asked fanning the eight envelopes out in front of Mrs Peacock. She begrudgingly took number two. Boddy proceeded to Madame Rose who took number seven.
‘Lets go for my lucky number; four’, said Miss Scarlett choosing her envelope. Mrs White then took number three, while the Reverend chose number eight. Boddy then rounded the other side of the table where the Colonel picked number five; the Professor went for number one, leaving Captain Brown with number six.
‘Now ladies and gentlemen, may I suggest that you retire to other rooms and open your envelopes. Seven of you will be very relieved.’
The guests begin to head off to other parts of the house. Madame Rose went to the Ballroom, Professor Plum headed to his favourite retreat, the Library. Captain Brown headed for the Lounge, but on opening the door he saw a shocked Mrs Peacock just about to open her envelope with a letter opener.
‘Sorry’ he mumbled and hurried out to another room.

Later…we can see what the suspects did five minutes after receiving their envelopes.

Boddy crosses the hall to a small table where the phone sat next to a large statuette. He picked up the telephone receiver, carefully covered the mouthpiece and listened.
‘I’m not joking Miles, I know it sounds unbelievable, but we are all here at his house and one of us has been instructed to kill you!’
‘And do you know who the assassin is?’
‘No, all I know is that it isn’t me. I’ll do my best to find out though. I must go Miles, John may be about and will be furious if he knows I’ve told you all this. Goodbye.’
The caller hung up. Boddy did the same and quickly hurried away.
******
Mrs White is sat in the Kitchen, crying. A bottle of poison sits on the table.
******
Two guests were talking in the Conservatory.
‘Do you believe me when I say I’m not the assassin?’
‘Why wouldn’t I? Do you believe that I’m not?’
‘Of course Katherine. We have to do something.’
‘But what can we do? We don’t know who the killer is. And how do we know that the chosen person won’t go through with the deed?’
‘We don’t. But we have a moral obligation to do whatever we can to ensure Miles’ safety.’
******
Captain Brown comes in through the front door into the Hall, hangs up his scarf on a hook and exits.
******
Colonel Mustard is with an animated Madame Rose in the Billiard Room.
‘I knew eet Colonel, I could zee it – a dark shadow hangs over zis house.’ She turns and heads for the door, turning to speak as she leaves. ‘I knew eet, zumthing bad would appen tonight.’ She left dramatically.
‘Then why on earth didn’t you tell us earlier?’ sighed Mustard staring at a sabre hanging on the wall.
******
Professor Plum is stood leaning against one of the tall backed dining chairs. In his hand is the killer card.

Later still…

Captain Brown is in the hall, having decided to make a quiet escape.
‘Aarrggh’
Miss Scarlett appears from a passageway.
‘Robert, its Boddy. Someone has killed him.’

In Round One...

Detectives can ask 2 questions each, either to the same or two different suspects. You should post the questions publicly, although the suspects' answers will be PM'd to you.
Then you can make your first suggestion. (via PM)
I will publicly reveal all the detectives scores, but not who scored what. You will be PM'd with your own score.

Captain Brown: Was your scarf still on the hook when you went to leave?

Professor Plum: What did you plan to do with the "killer card"? Were you going to swap it with someone, or burn it, or something?

Professor, were you able to find the revolver that Mr. Boddy had mentioned?

Mrs. White, what happened to the broken glass?
