The 1963 edition has been a re-issued staple for almost a decade now. The original 1949 set has been re-issued, and the suspects and weapons live on in Winning Moves' Classic Edition out last year (along with the '96 rooms and board). Even the Franklin Mint edition has been re-issued twice! With the recent release of Frontgate's Bookshelf editon based on the 1986 set, it begs the question: which edition should next get a re-issue?

It's still a bit too soon for the 2002 edition, which can still be found on a few store shelves.
I've included an "Other" category for those who think bringing back Master Detective, VCR, or even transplanting some British or European editions (like Hasbro did with the US 1963 Vintage bookshelf edition) might be a better choice.
Passionate arguments for your choice as well as suggestions of how you would re-issue it are encouraged! |

I vote 1992. Out of all the standard US editions, it had the shortest run. It only was in circulation for four years! _________________ It's exhausting being this juicy. |

I agree with you, that and I'm pretty sure it's the only one never to get remade.
I'm sure that there will be like a 75th or 100th aniversery edition, so there isn't really a need to remake the 50th anniversary. and 1996 doesn't need remaking, those suspects are EVERYWHERE! On the puzzles, the card games, they have 4 different boxed games (1994, 1996, 50th, and limited gift) _________________ IT'S ALL TO SHOCKING! |

Would you believe a 1949 Clue re-issue ... Again?
I must say I do like the muted colors much better. The olive and burgundy go a long way toward making that original board a lot more palatable. But like all Winning Solutions products, it just falls short, with blue-backed cards that don't match anything. How about matching the card-backs to the olive green instead? And maybe tinting them ivory to match the rooms on the board?

As much as I love the 1996 version, I would love to see the 1992 version reissued. It had some of the best suspect portrayals ever. I particularly loved Professor Plum and Mrs. White. _________________ The two women exchanged the kind of glance women use when no knife is handy.

No, there appears to be a definite guard sticking out from either side. It would be a great opportunity to offer a butter knife, but they probably feel like Parker Brothers did in 1950 - that a table knife is just not as exciting as a hunting knife. So again I say, *beep* tradition and update the dam card!
The wrench definitely does not have a loop, either, and the lead pipe is the most unusual i've seen, just a long bar bent at a 90 degree angle ... So they don't seem to be going for authenticity. On the other hand, that rope appears to be from an actual 62 year old set.
The real question is WHY!? What's with the Pre-1972 re-issues? I'm not a huge fan of the 1992, but I would rather see it than this!! Is Hasbro afraid the great concepts from 1972-2008 will canabolize sales from DTS? |

Haha ... You have to be a distributor. winning Solutions makes custom games for third-party retailers like Frintgate and Restoration Hardware. Clearly these are the 2011 designs they are shopping, so figure Restoration Hardware or Frontgate might bring these to market this Fall. I doubt these are pictures of actual production run games, but the prototype mockups used for sale and demonstration, available for customization by the retailer. |

Overall, the only thing I like is the pawns (which are from the Limited Gift Edition). While sleek, I suppose, the box is nothing outstanding and there is nothing else offered we haven't seen before. _________________ It's exhausting being this juicy. |

As I already stated in the other post, those are NOT the LGE pawns. Yes, they match the shapes printed on the cards, but the actual LGE pawns are much taller. They look more like bowling pins.

This is the best looking of the 1949 boards I have seen. And I think I do like these pawns quite a lot. Perhaps better than any other pawn design sold with a Clue/do game to date.
But honestly, if they are going to re-issue the 1949 edition, in this day of Photoshop, they really should color the rooms. While I appreciate the simple mono-chrome design (like the Hitchcock game), simply warming up the existing colors is not enough – they really need to make it more interesting than the original was, as this has more or less been done already and it did not sell well. This is one of the reasons the Vintage/Nostalgia versions are getting so long in the tooth ... those highly stylized cartoon characters just get boring year after year.
The only thing I can imagine is that Hasbro does not want one of these Classic games to compete with DTS – perhaps why they allowed the 1986 edition, as it is the least charismatic of the post 60s designs. But the '86 re-issue has not sold well for Frontgate based on the heavily discounted price and the continued availability on their website. So really, how about something more interesting this year? Then again, Frontgate appeals to the elderly who sift through junk catalogues all day long and long for the good ol' days. And such an edition would target those who fondly remember this edition which they played with their families as a child, or young parent. So perhaps there is some wisdom in it ... though I can't imagine today's kids being stimulated by such a dated looking edition. |
