Oh No, Colonel Mustard is going to be related to football. We all know how that went in the past.

Love Peacock's and Autumn's descriptions btw

Hahaha, I did take that into consideration but I promise this is take is pretty innocent. I always kind of place my mysteries in an old country house in the midwest United States, so it seemed like something he'd pick up I guess.

Mrs. Peacock has agreed to host the annual Arlington High charity race to raise money for the high school football team, but when the head coach ends up dead, Autumn, her friends, and a couple Grange regulars are all under suspicion.

"If At Last You Do Succeed"

——

The Circle Drive, 10:00 AM

Sergeant Parker Snow zoomed up the driveway in his light blue police cruiser, swerving to avoid high school students running around making mischief and confused parents wandering aimlessly all over the place. Good lord. Elizabeth certainly had her hands full, he thought. From near the garden, he could see Mrs. Peacock, manning the sign-in table for the race participants, waving her arms wildly to get the attention of whoever would listen.

The Garden, 10:02 AM

Mrs. Elizabeth Peacock waved her arms wildly to try to get the attention of anybody who would listen. “Sign in for the race participants is over here! she hollered. Deciding to sponsor and host this race was a truly foolish decision. What was she thinking? Crazy high school students running all over her beautiful property. Positioning the sign in table in front of the garden was her best idea yet; it kept the hooligans from trampling her flower beds. As she finished clipping a race number label out of a large sheet with a small pair of scissors for a waiting kid, an older man with graying hair and a whistle around his neck approached the stand.

“You look like you could use a hand. he said, smiling and stepping behind the table, “We sure do appreciate this, Elizabeth. I hope you know that.

“Oh Phil. she sighed, patting the man on the back and smiling, “You know I do. I love supporting your phenomenal team and my niece’s school! It’s just- proved to be a rather overwhelming undertaking I suppose.

“Well I know that. And you know I’ll make it up to you like I always do. He leaned over and gave her a small kiss on the cheek. Mrs. Peacock blushed, looking around to see if anybody had seen.

The Dining Room, 10:10 AM

Colonel Pat Mustard turned away from the bay window in disgust and slammed his fist on the dining table, knocking over one of the silver candlesticks. He had had his suspicions about Elizabeth and Phil Donahue, but now he was sure of it. She was wooing him while seeing Phil behind his back. He never should’ve accepted that coaching job. Between dealing with brats like Autumn’s friend Berry and now the double dealings of the head coach, he couldn’t stand it.

Having just come in through the front hall, Sgt. Snow followed the noise and found Mustard in the Dining Room.Pat! What’s up? All these **** kids running around is getting mighty stressful. You running in the race this year?

“Good god no. he grunted. “I’ve got enough on my mind. And besides, I’m too old.

“Nonsense. Snow said, taking a seat at the table, “And besides, these kids aren’t that bad. Being the police liaison for the school has its advantages, actually. You really get to know them on a personal level. And they uh.. pay you off if you decide that you’ll turn a blind eye to their shenanigans. He tapped the side of his nose knowingly.

“How interesting. A voice from behind the two men suddenly was heard. Coach Donahue walked into the room, carrying a croquet mallet, giggling quietly to himself as he patted Sergeant Snow on the back. “Now if I had only had my tape recorder running to catch that nifty little confession of yours. I’m sure the principal at Arlington High would love to hear what double deals you’ve been running with the student population. I had suspected for a long time, of course.

Snow whirled around and stood up, “Like *beep* you did! He angrily reached for the overturned candlestick from the table.

Colonel Mustard stepped forward, “Listen Phil, Parker. Let’s not have any trouble here. It’s a day for charity. He took the candlestick from Snow and set it back down. The Sergeant hurried off. Mustard continued, “Though, Phil, I would like to talk to you later.. about..

Donahue strolled toward him, “About the team, no doubt?

“Yes.. er.. of course, the team. he shrugged, trying to hide his rage.

“Perfect. he turned to leave. “Oh, and you should come on out! The mini croquet tourney before the marathon is starting soon. Tell the Sergeant too. With a wink and a friendly nod, he too left the room.

The Drawing Room, 10:30 AM

Autumn placed a silver corkscrew on the buffet table she had just finished setting up. Perfect, all set for the reception at the end of the race. Her Aunt couldn’t possibly be mad now. Well, any madder than she already was at the state of the Grange what with so many people running around like lunatics.

Just then, Berry and Dawn rushed in. “Hey babe. Berry smiled, putting an arm around Autumn. “How’re things looking?

“Not bad, I finished setting up the entire buffet all by myself! she said proudly.

“Don’t forget this! Dawn said, thumping a plastic jar of rat poison down on the table.

Autumn let out a sigh and picked up the jar, shaking her head. “Dawn, when are you gonna let all that business with Coach Donahue go already? It’s been like, what? Like a year?

Dawn snatched the jar away and laughed, “Oh you know I’m just kidding! Your aunt said this was just laying around outside; we were passing and she asked if we’d take it back to the Kitchen for her.

Autumn looked relieved. Berry giggled and crossed his arms. “Ehh, Coach Phil’s a great guy. Most of the time. He didn’t mean to have you suspended from the cheer team, Dawn.

“I’m sure he did. she argued back. “Coach Donahue knew full well what he was doing. What with his rivalry with my father and all. I’m sure he’ll get what’s coming to him though, believe me.

The Study, 10:45 AM

Mrs. Peacock moved an antique paperweight off of a large stack of papers and began to flip through them as Phil Donahue walked in. “Liz, we need to talk.

“I’ll be right out, I’ll just make the end of the kiddie’s egg toss tourney if I hurry! she said, keeping her head down in the papers.

Coach Donahue moved closer to her and put a hand on her shoulder, “No, it’s not about the race or anything like that. It’s about Autumn. You know as well as I that her ditching all of my PE classes is going to mean expulsion from the school soon enough, and I just can’t keep covering it up for her. I’ll have to come clean and neither you nor her will like the result.

Mrs. Peacock looked up in defeat, first at the paperweight, then to Phil, “But what do you propose I do about it then?

Placing a hand gently on her back, he leaned over to whisper in her ear, “I have a few.. ideas.

Disgusted, she pulled away briskly, “Well if that’s the case then I’ll see you in *beep* first!

As Mrs. Peacock got up to leave, Autumn, listening from behind the Study door, hurried away before her aunt could catch her.

The Garden, 11:05 AM

Berry approached Coach Donahue manning the sign-in table. “Hey coach, he started, “Do you think I could talk to you real quick about the game next Friday?

Phil looked at him and gave a quick nod. “Sure. Uh, Davis? Yeah, Davis! Could you man the table for me for a hot second? Thanks, kid. The two turned to stroll the garden to talk in private. “I think I know what you wanna talk about, Berry.

“Well it’s about the game. Berry said, “I know I was a couple pounds underweight last week but I just got this note from the school nurse. She re-weighed me and I’m finally within weight regulations, so I can play Friday! He handed the coach a crumpled slip of paper.

Taking it from him and examining it for a bit, Donahue re-crumpled it and sighed, “Berry. The nurse told me she knew that you had weighed down your pants with that history book. She said she could tell from a mile away. And that tells me that I’m probably not going to let you play Friday. Why, for that kind of deception I could have you suspended!

With that, Donahue turned to walk back to the table. Berry let out an angry grunt as he hurried back to the house.

The Drawing Room, 11:20 AM

Sergeant Snow surveyed the buffet table. Not bad, he thought. The race had just started, surely nobody would miss one or two of those delicious garlic herb crackers.

The Guest House, 11:50 PM

Colonel Mustard angrily stormed out of the Guest House after his meeting with Coach Donahue. B@stard, he thought. That man would get what he deserved, one way or another.

The Kitchen, 12:00 PM

Dawn placed the poison jar on the Kitchen counter next to the sink. Oh darn. She was going to miss the end of the race! As she was hurrying out the back door, Colonel Mustard burst in and began to rifle through the cabinets.

The Study, 12:10 PM

Coach Donahue peeked into the Study, “Hello? Liz? Nobody. Oh, of course. She was probably monitoring the finish line outside. Oh well, she’d be back soon enough; the race had to be nearing a close by now, as he could hear the cheers growing louder from outside.

The Circle Drive, in front of the house 12:25 PM

As Mrs. Peacock was waving in and congratulating the last of the racers, a shout was heard. Colonel Mustard rushed up to her and whispered, “Now I don’t want to cause a panic, Liz. But somebody’s murdered Donahue!

“What?? Dawn gasped, “I heard that! She fainted into Berry’s arms.

“Is she okay? Sergeant Snow asked, “Pat, what did you tell Liz??

Autumn rushed over from the other end of the driveway, “What’s happening? Dawn, babe?! Berry, what happened??

“I don’t know! Berry protested, “She just fainted!

Mrs. Peacock sighed. So much for charity work.

----

Coach Phil Donahue is dead! You know that you need to discover the location of his murder, the weapon used, and his killer! 3 questions before your first deduction. Have fun!

Dawn - can you explain your relationship with the victim please?

Autumn - After you were listening to your aunt in the Study, what did you do and did you tell anyone about what you heard?

Snow - Did you see what happened to the Croquet Mallet?

Mustard - How did the conversation go in the guest house?

Snow - What did you do after pinching those crackers?

Mustard - Why were you rifling through the kitchen cupboards?

"Well Coach Phil had lost a city council position he was running for to my daddy, and right after that happened, he had me kicked off of the cheer squad because apparently all of a sudden my GPA had dropped, though I was positive it hadn't! We've always kind of held a grudge I guess."

"I went back outside to help with the race. I ran into Berry, and I told him about it, only because I just had to tell somebody, ya know?"

"No, I didn't. I expect it just got left outside when the race started, but I can't be sure."

"Not well, to say the least. I told him to keep his hands off of Liz, but he retaliated by seeing he'd have me reported to the School Board and ejected as coach. I was very angry, so I just kind of stormed off."

"And delicious crackers, too! I went off to look for Pat, just to make sure he never hurt anybody. After I had looked for a bit with no luck, I went out front to catch the end of the race."

"It's rather embarrassing really, but I was so angry after that meeting that I went to the Kitchen to take a pill for my blood pressure. I keep the pill bottle stashed away in a Kitchen cupboard."

There seems to be a large gap between the cracker nibbling and the end of the race. I think maybe you went back for some more and killed him.

Study - the last place we seen the victim alive.

Croquet Mallet - Complete guess, but it seems unaccounted for.

I've got 2 suspects but I'm being drawn to Colonel Mustard over my other suspect. I think he found out that the victim tried to make a move on Mrs. Peacock and he just lost it.

Both very interesting deductions- let's have a look.

Jamie, you said:

Image

At this stage you've got TWO out of three correct! Very well done indeed.

Black, now yours:

Image

You appear to have gotten NONE out of those three correct. With that in mind, we can now eliminate the Study, the mallet, and Colonel Mustard, who is cleared of all suspicion.

Let's have a look at some additional evidence:

The Drawing Room, 11:20 AM

Sergeant Snow surveyed the buffet table. Not bad, he thought. The race had just started, surely nobody would miss one or two of those delicious garlic herb crackers. But where had Pat gone? He'd better have a look around. Wouldn't want him hurting anybody with a lot of witnesses.. er.. high schoolers running around.

The Guest House, 11:45 PM

"I'm sorry Pat," Donahue started, "But if you insist on ranting like this then I'll have no choice but to refer your resignation to the school board. You're not stable!"

"Stability has nothing to do with it!" Mustard shouted. "You'll get yours, Donahue, I promise you that!"

He angrily stormed out of the Guest House after his meeting with Coach Donahue.

He grabbed a pill bottle from one and took one of the small pills. His gaze turned to the poison jar sitting next to the sink. From the Kitchen window, he could see Autumn pacing the garden.

The Circle Drive, in front of the house 12:25 PM

Sergeant Snow walked up to Mrs. Peacock, still positioned at the finish line. "How's it going, Liz? Keeping it together?

She sighed, "Barely. But I feel a lot better now. How about you?"

He laughed, "Honestly, I'm just excited for the buffet at this point."

She smiled. As she was waving in and congratulating the last of the racers, a shout was heard. Colonel Mustard rushed up to her and whispered, “Now I don’t want to cause a panic, Liz. But somebody’s murdered Donahue!

“What?? Dawn gasped, “I heard that! She fainted into Berry’s arms.

----

2 more questions in this round, of any suspects of course. After they're answered, they'll be followed by another deduction.

Autumn, who knew that you left the corkscrew in the Drawing Room?

Dawn, what were your movements from being in the kitchen to the discovery of the body.

I'm guessing the killer is wrong.

Jamie, your questions:

"I was out there for a while. I was trying to think of what to do, how I would break it to Aunt Liz if I got suspended or expelled. The next thing I did was hurry to the front of the house to catch the end of the race before Dawn fainted."

"I left them on the sign-in table, almost certainly."

And Black:

"I went out the back door from the Kitchen then straight to the front of the house to see the end of the race. I met Berry on the way and we walked together."

"I'm not sure if anybody specifically knew it was there, but it was just sitting on the table so anybody could've seen it I suppose."

I still think that Snow had a lot to lose - maybe he picked up the Corkscrew whilst nibbling on those crackers. And going by the map, maybe he bumped into the victim in the Dining Room.

Certainly great reasoning behind each deduction- let's have a look:

Black:

Image

You've got ONE out of three correct this time around.

Jamie:

Image

You've also got ONE out of three.

For the remaining rounds, just one question, followed immediately by a deduction.

Now that did surprise me.

Mrs. Peacock - Where are the Scissors?

Colonel - Where did you put the candlestick? I want to triple check that fact.

Peacock - Were the Scissors still on the sign in table at the end of the race do you know?

And...regardless of the answer:-

I am right on the suspect, and it must be the Drawing Room. I think he poisoned the crackers or something.
