Cluedo Logic Puzzles: Can You Solve the Crime?

Post by CluedoAuthor12 » Sun Jan 16, 2011 5:00 pm

This will be something new. :)

Each mystery will consist of a (very short) passage detailing Inspector Colin Gray's quest to solve the various crimes his friends from Arlington Grange always seem to end up in. The crime featured in each mystery will not necessarily always be murder.

You won't have to discover locations or weapons, just whodunnit, which will also usual end up requiring an explanation as to how the Inspector new that person was guilty.

This will all likely make sense after the first case, comig soon.

Perhaps this first case will gve everyone a better idea of what these little mysteries will consist of.
The first case is entitled:

"Maze of Suspects"

Inspector Colin Gray was on a pleasant drive out in the country. His good friends at Arlngtom Grange were on a fall outing to Queen Victoria's Corn Maze, just outside of town. Herr Braun was able to convince his friend, the owner of the maze to let him, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, and Miss Scarlet and her new boyfriend Kyle, to visit the massive corn maze free of charge.

"Peace and quiet." the Inspector sighed, rolling down his window, "A nice drive in the country without those crazy..." **BEEP**
"Calling all patrol cars- now reporting a possible homicide at Queen Victoria's Corn Maze just off Route 11 in Arlington. Nearest unit respond."
Gray picked up his car radio- "On it."

* * *

Winding down the paths of the corn maze, Inspector Gray found himself confronted with a dead end- and a dead body. Miss Scarlet rushed to the body, "Kyle!!" There was a knife stuck in between her boyfriend's ribs.

Around her stood Herr Braun, the Professor, and Mrs. Peacock.

Miss Scarlet looked up at Gray, "My new boyfriend Kyle and I came into the maze and split up just for fun," she said in between sobs, "After a lot of wandering, I wound up outside at another entrance. I was going to try again, so I called for Kyle, to see how he was doing. That's when I heard it... Something like a scream, or a scuffle- like a fight..."

"I heard it too." Mrs. Peacock spoke up, "I was on a bench at the center of the maze. I didn't hear any scuffling, probably just because the sound of the fountain drowned it out. I hurried out of the maze and ran into Josephine, and then the two of us went back into the maze and found the body- together."

Herr Braun approached the Inspector, "Herr Inspector. I only brought us here to have a good time, you know. Never expected anything like this. It was just us five! The only customers today! Imagine- on such a gorgeous day! I went to the office after I saw Miss Scarlet, Kyle, and Mrs Peacock into the maze to look for my friend the owner. The Professor was helping to rewire the electrical system that day. I turned off the fuse box for him. Then I left the office to pick up some trash I saw outside. Peter was still working when I heard a man scream."

Poressor Plum was te last to speak up, "What Wolf said is true. I was in the crawl space under the office the whole time, redoing the wiring. Messy job. I didn't bargain on doing work that day, I jus wanted a fun day at a corn maze, but I like to help out where I can, you know. I didn't see anything or hear anyone until the scream."

Gray scratched his chin. He bent down over the body and patted all the victim's pockets. "Well, the motive is questionable. But, I am an expert, after all."

Four suspicious faces turned their gaze from Kyle's body to the Inspector.
"Well," he began, "the solution is simple, if you'd care to listen in."

I I I

WHO KILLED KYLE?

HOW DID INSPECTOR GRAY KNOW?

Note: The owner of the maze is NOT a suspect.

There are no limits as to how many guesses or how many people participate. The first to deduce the truth wins!
Have fun :)

I think it was Mrs Peacock.

Miss Scarlett said she was outside the maze when she heard the scream. Mrs Peacock says she was at the centre when she heard the scream, then hurried out and found Miss Scarlett outside the maze before returning inside. Unless Miss Scarlett stood still for ages upon hearing the scream, Mrs Peacock would have to get out of the maze very quickly and at the start it says the maze is massive. So I guess Mrs Peacock lied and wasn't in the centre at all.

My suggestion:

*I too suspect Mrs. Peacock. My first thought was that it was strange to have a fountain in the middle of a corn maze, but if there were one, it would have to be electrically powered. Plum had the electric off, thus the fountain couldn't be going. Yet Peacock said she didn't hear a scuffle over its noise. She's lying.*

I have one; but it's not really a murder mystery one.

Mrs. Peacock was driving in her BMW. See saw a car in the village with the licence plate IXMNIZ. She thought to herself, I know what occupation the driver of that car has.

What was the driver's occupation?

Michael, you are absolutely correct! :D

Jamie, you came close, though, just the wrong explanation.

Mrs. Peacock, upset at her stepdaughter's new boyfriend, killed him in the maze after a heated argument. A fountain must be powered by electricity, but with all the electricity shut off, we know Mrs Peaock must be lying about not being able to hear over the rush of a fountain.

Well done. :)

Here's one:

The police arrived almost immediately - Sgt. Gray having been just passing by Tudor Close on his usual rounds was first on the scene. Mrs. White was frantic as she ushered him into the Study. "You're never going to get the blood and brains out of those drapes," he told her dryly.

Beneath the revolver on the now-late-Dr. Black's desk was a list of names. Gray noticed it immediately.

"Those were the guests that just left!" Mrs. White explained to him.

Sgt. Gray wasted no time. "These people just left," he said to his men. "Round them up!"

But Mrs. White knew that wasn't going to be so easy. She explained:

There were five guests that evening whose last names were:
Scarlet
Mustard
Green
Peacock
Plum

She could never remember whose first name was whose:
Avery
Bailey
Cameron
Parker
Reese

They left by the following methods:
Bicycle
Bus
Limosine
Hot Air Balloon
Walking

Sgt. Gray's men rushed out the door and Mrs. White went upstairs to pack her bags. She heard the men return after the following intevals:
20 minutes
25 minutes
30 minutes
35 minutes
40 minutes

Gray's men had rounded everyone up and was trying to determine:

Which suspect had which first name and left by which method and - for his report - how long it took them to be apprehended.

These were the facts:

1. Reese would never dream of taking a bus. Professor Plum's first name was Avery.

2. Miss Scarlet took ten minutes longer to apprehend than it took for Bailey but she was apprehended five minutes faster than the supsect who took the bus.

3. The suspect who walked took 20 minutes to apprehend. Parker (fittingly) left in the limo.

4. Cameron didn’t use the hot air balloon but arrived five minutes before Colonel Mustard, whose first name wasn’t Reese.

5. Mrs. Peacock was apprehended in 30 minutes.

6. The suspect who left by means of a bicycle was apprehended ten minutes earlier than Parker but his or her last name wasn’t Green.

Sgt. Gray now had all the information for his report. Well... except for whodunit. But that was only a minor detail...

Another one:

"I tried to warn him not to host this weekend party," Madame Rose told Mrs. White. "The crystal ball never lies."

"You should have told ME," Mrs. White hissed. "But now it's too late. I never should have let THOSE five bring side dishes for dinner. Now the police are going to think *I* poisoned him."

"I believe you didn't," Madame Rose said consolingly.

"But I'll never be able to prove it. I can't even remember who brought what."

Madame Rose pulled out her crystal ball. "Maybe I can help."

She saw five guests coming to Boddy Mansion:
Miss Scarlet
Colonel Mustard
Mr. Green
Mrs. Peacock
Professor Plum

They arrived that day at the following times:
7:30am
8:30am
11:30am
4:30pm
6:00pm

They brought the following dishes:
Green Bean Casserole
Roasted Asperagus
Scalloped Potatoes
Mexican Rice
Macaroni Salad

Their thoughts were consumed by:
Jealousy
Greed
Religious Madness
Unrequited Love
Fear

Mrs. White watched intently as Madame Rose studied the crystal ball and revealed the following facts:

1. Of Professor Plum and the person who was consumed by jealousy, one arrived at 6:00pm and the other brought macaroni salad.
2. Mrs. Peacock arrived earlier than Miss Scarlet.
3. The person who is in love with Mr. Boddy is not Mrs. Peacock.
4. Mr. Green arrived later than the one who brought the Mexican rice.
5. The person who wants Mr. Boddy's money is Professor Plum.
6. The 5 suspects were the person who is in love with Mr. Boddy, the person who arrived at 11:30am, the one who brought scalloped potatoes, Professor Plum, and the one who suffers from religious madness.
7. The one who brought roasted asperagus arrived later than the one who brought the Mexican rice.
8. Either the person who arrived at 7:30am or the person who arrived at 6:00pm tries to hide their fear of Mr. Boddy.
9. The one who brought the roasted asperagus is not Mr. Green.
10. The one who brought Mexican Rice has no religion.
11. The one who brought the macaroni salad was Miss Scarlet.

"I know whodunit," gasped Madame Rose. "The crystal ball reveals all!"

I decided to do something off of Murder, Mysteries and Mayhem. The body of a woman was found earlier:

Image

The room cards represent the order the rooms were in.

The evidence points towards six suspects:

Image Image Image Image Image Image

And, which of these weapons took the victims life?

Image Image Image Image Image Image

Some rooms had multiple weapons, some none. Same thing for people. The room with one person and one weapons tells the tale.

1. The left wing of the house had one room with two people and three weapons. The other contained no weapons or people.

2. No one was in a room with someone of the opposite gender.

3. There were two rooms with no one in them. They were not connected.

4. Ms. Mango was in a room under two people (which had the revolver), and east of a room containing one person.

5. The only thing in the bathroom was the candlestick.

6. Miss Peach and Captain Seafoam (who was with the man wearing glasses) were on opposite ends of the same floor.

7. Miss Peach and Ms. Mango were on opposite ends of different floors.

8. Mother Drab, because of a bad back, had both the pillow and the cane sword.

9. The rope was used to hold the leg of a plaid-print chair together.

10. Ms. Mango was unarmed!

My solution:

Kitchen - empty
Toilet - Candlestick only
Hall - Ms. Mango only
Billiard Room - Rev. Green, Capt. Seafoam, Revolver
Smoking Room - Mother Drab, Miss Peach, Cane-Sword, Cushion, Rope

Murderer: Col. Mustard with the Bomb in the Dining Room
