Disagree

I'm a little puzzled by a person calling him or herself "emo." Isn't that a music classification? There may be many persons who call themselves by their musical preferences, or by the themes they share in common with some musical style, but there aren't many such groups. In the absence of people calling themselves "Baroque," "Indie Pop," or "Death Metal," "Emo," is left a very vague descriptor.

That said, I came to this realization in the midst of writing a retort defending the sensibilities behind Emo music. The principle of Emo at its best is not intended to be just wailing because things hurt, because such a person would come to think of wailing and hurting as the only natural state, and would cease to really feel at all. The principle is in personal character. It's about facing every decision with one's full and most personal faculties -- in some balance of emotion and intellect, holding nothing back, fearing no reprirsal.

For most people this kind of "real" living brings on them a great deal of pain, and not because they made mistakes, but because other people are stupid, vain, and cruel. Emo is about these people, that is the ones who are living "real" lives, who use their entire faculties, and are caught between facing their problems with strength and humility in one hand, and the soul-erasing annonymity of silence in the other.

Emo creates a voice for that kind of anguish; its melodies reveal the pained frustrations not of the weak, but of the strong. Not of the whiners, but of the near-stoics.

Anyway, that's what I get out of it.
It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. -- Blithe Spirit, Noel Coward.
